I have a 2001 Clio Grande 1.2. I bought it 2 years ago for 500 quid and to be fair it's been good to me....until the other night that is! I was returning from a friends on the M54. The red engine icon flashed up for a second or two, the air from the heater went cold and the temp gauge rose to 3/4 from its usual halfway. There was also an intermittent knocking sound coming from the passenger side. The car was otherwise driving as usual. I got off the motorway and found a layby. The knocking sound continued for quite a few minutes after I'd switched off. After sitting for 2 1/4 hrs there were no AA patrol men available except for a recovery driver who arrived at 3am. He duly dropped me off at my local garage. His view was.. it's probably the head gasket. Anyway I waited the next day for the garage to call with their verdict expecting the worst. They called and all they could confirm was that there was a coolant circulation problem. They said they'd tried to bleed the system but had broken the nut on the bleed valve. I asked what the solution was going to be. They told me that 'if it's not the head gasket...it probably will be soon' and that they proposed replacing it along with having the head skimmed etc etc. They estimated the cost to be £600. Given the value of the car and the fact I've been on reduced pay due to 3 months sick leave, also the fact that the garage didn't seem exactly certain what the problem was, I decided to bring the car home. It started first time and ran as well as ever. I left it running for over half an hour to see if I could figure anything out myself. After revving for a while the temp gauge rose to 3/4. I tried the heater on maximum and it blew cold. The radiator fan cut in ok. There's no mayo in the oil filler cap and no white smoke from the exhaust. After a short while however that knocking noise started. It sounds like metal on metal...akin to a pound coin in the washing machine. The sound is coming from the passenger side...somewhere below and between the battery and the radiator. The engine ran smoothly throughout. I assume the issues are all related. Any suggestions will be greatly appreciated. A friend suggested it's the waterpump..hopefully some kind soul on here can confirm.
Kind regards,
Paul
