Metal Particles in fuel filter...
I was just wondering if having
some metal particles in the fuel filter is ever "normal"? Here's a bit of back ground. Check injection/injector fault message has appeared about 4 times over the last 18k miles. However, car would not start after sitting all night last week. Cranked, tried to start but died immediately. I kept the key turned, each time tried to start but died right away. After 4 attempts I got the check injection type message. Renault read the fault codes as "df025 preheating unit diagnostic connection" & "df053 rail pressure regulation function". Renault said next stage was looking in fuel tank for metal particles but I declined their offer as it would be more labour. They said all live data was fine. Car runs well. Plenty of power, no cutting out/hesitation/stalling etc. One thing I can say is that the mpg on the computer has dropped off a bit from 60 to around 56. Not a huge amount I know, but still using more fuel I think.
Wouldn't start after sitting all night again yesterday. Started on the second attempt but ran lumpy. Had to keep the revs on for 20 secs as it would have died imho, but running ok after that. Decided with my mechanic to change the fuel filter to check for particles today. Found a small amount of "glitter". Mechanic says he doesn't think it's enough to be concerned about at all. Next stage is 4 glow plugs and leak off test.
So, I was just wondering if a small amount of particles could ever be classed as "usual" or is any a sign of doom & gloom?
Thanks.
