I'm the go-to-guy for a friend with any and all car problems. Her '98 Megane Cabrio (manual) developed a transmission-related problem today. And the car's now stuck in a parking garage at her work. - Naturally I'm the one who's gonna fix it. I'm going to have a look at it on Wednesday, so I thought I'm gonna ask for ideas here first...
She tells me the gear sifter has felt a bit stiff lately, but though it might be just because the -20 to -30C weather we've been having lately. But today when she backed out of her parking spot (after the car sitting there for the day) it reversed just fine, but when trying to select 1st gear she found that it would not accept it.
The gear sifter now only moves sideways, but will not go back to reverse or any other gear either. Except for some reason it seems to go into 5th gear? Naturally she couldn't drive it, but had to leave it there. It doesn't matter if the car's running or not, the gear sifter only moves sideways and to 5th gear...
So, I'm open to any and all ideas...
Personally I suspect the gear linkage, but cannot confirm before I see the car on Wednesday.
