so this said generic code readers are very basic not really worth the money in the sense that most fault codes on modern cars are p-coded ie dealer model only codes so when trying to find a component that has broken on a car with all these modern sensors and ecu's is hit and miss with out accurate data to go by.. live date oebd scanners are a must, but a generic scanner would only give a very small amount of date as a rule.. hmmm its cheap for a reason normally...
so many people ask that question like my car wont run whats wrong with it. the answer is always the same without a oebd scan with a professional level platform like on snap-on or delphi etc its luck dip, could end up replacing more components than is needed...
4 years a go i took a gamble on buying at autocom cdp+ from china £64.00 plus postage on a recommendation from a guy who owns a car tuning and ecu repair business, when it arrive at work i was still using snap-on sollis i stopped using the snap-on and have used this autocom cdp+ on a daily use.. its really a china version of a full delphi platform scan and encoding machine installs on any laptop.. i have repaired thousands of cars over the years only brand it was a bit short on was mazda mx 5 and rx8 but still could read fault codes and reset airbag lights and abs, https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vw8e_lWUsms
check out this link. you just cant own and repair a modern car without one of these. it encodes ecu's electric handbrakes injectors fuel pumps resets air bag light abs lights services lights and honestly reads any fault code with what the fault is in writing no having to go on line to match up a code numbers. it even shows m/g of fuel each injector using when running,, really good when turbo is a bit worn and if injector starts running on -10 to -300 m/g of fuel used will tell you if engine is running on its own oil from failing bearing in turbo or to much crankcase pressure pushing oil in to inlet.. i'm not selling anything or have any interest is any gain from this bit of knowledge but these are by far the best deal with oebd scanners and do everything just short of tuning a car software..
