Laguna MK II - 2003 - 1.9 DCi - Won't Start - Is it the fuel pump...?

Hello,

The car is a MK II Laguna 2003 Diesel 1.9 DCi

The car had been driven during the day, in the evening I popped to the local shop (2 min drive) and when I went to go home it wouldn't start...
The dash lights up as normal when the key card is inserted. When you press the Start button it goes to turn over (rotates?) but never quite starts

We had it towed home and so far I have changed all 4 glow plugs; 3 were dead when we checked

I have also, in an effort to diagnose if it was the fuel filter or the pump, had the pipe from the fuel filter to the pump (in the engine bay) off and fed fuel directly in to the pump whilst trying to turn it over.. nothing

We also had everything connected as normal but a pipe from the pump fuel return in to a bottle; nothing passed in to the pipe when the engine was turned over

The fuel filter is due for a change but I'm hesitant to think its that given the lack of action on the fuel pump

We have even had the pipe from the fuel pump to the fuel rail undone whilst turning over and there was no fuel spurting from the pump...

This is the engine set up where there is no primer bulb and the filter/filter housing is one piece

Does this have an additional fuel pump along the route from the tank to the engine fuel pump that could be dead?

How can I confirm its the engine bay fuel pump?

Does anyone have any other troubleshooting or thoughts? I'm keen to not have to replace the pump as it looks a big/costly job

Thanks in advance
Sam
