Possible Power Steering Pump Problem

Possible Power Steering Pump Problem

Hi everyone, looking for a bit of advice.
I'm trying to track down a squealing noise from the PAS pump, alternator area of my Laguna II 1.6. I have changed the bearings on the alternator but the noise remains. Rather than replace the PAS pump next, I'd rather eliminate it from the system, briefly run the car - without PAS - , and see if the noise remains or disappears. To do this I was planning on putting in a shorter fan belt. Would anyone know what size belt would do the trick?
My reasoning behind my action is that it could also be a bearing going in the tensioner, or the idler pulley, or the a/c compressor(but the noise does not seem to be coming from as far down as the compressor).
Thanks for the help..
