2002 Scenic 1.8 Petrol intermittent revs issue

Hi, my 2002 1.8 16v petrol scenic has just developed an intermittent issue with the revs holding or steadily rising when you drop the clutch to change gear.
I first noticed it Tuesday morning after filling up, as I approached traffic lights I had changed down to use engine braking but instead of slowing the car the engine speed steadily rose speeding me up instead!
From then on if you depressed the clutch the revs would either hold where they were, or steadily rise, or drop then steadily rise. By the time I got to work (20mins) the issue got less and when I parked the engine dropped to a normal idle and after revving the engine up it would just drop to normal idle.
The car then drove normally on the way home, and on the way to work this morning but half way home this evening it did it again, and like before it wouldn't do it once parked up at home.
I have searched through the old threads on here and can't find anyone with the same problem, most issues seem to be about revs dying not holding or increasing!
Are there any common/likely culprits for this issue? Thanks in advance
