Traffic 2006 2.5 fluctuating power?

Hello all... New to this forum, have done some searching but not found an exact match.

Have just bought a 06 Traffic 2.5 diesel Low Loader to convert to a horse box. it has done only 35k miles and has been stood a year. When I picked it up it first had no power at all below 2000 rpm and you had to rev it and slip the clutch to set off. When first started it wouldn't even rev above 2k. I limped to a petrol station and filled it with diesel as the gauge was showing no bars, and then after that it was fine, drove it 120 miles home, and another 20 miles thereafter.

The next day when I started it it did the same again, wouldn't Rev and no power. I drove it a bit thinking it was temperature related but it didn't get any better - until I stopped and restarted then engine and then it was much better - except when cruising at say 30 in 4th it would suddenly lose all power until you either took your foot off the throttle and back on again or floored it. It's been like it ever since - hopeless when started from cold, better when switched off/on again but when held at a steady, light throttle around or below 2000 rpm the power can fluctuate.

I'm pretty handy with cars but my experience is mostly with Volvo and Land Rover, Renaults are new to me. When it was playing up though it did give me a clue - when turned it off the engine chugged along for about 2 or 3 seconds after. Not sure on the Renault but if it was a Freelander Td4 then that's 99% indication of a fuel pressure regulator issue. It's only done it the once though.

Any suggestions/help appreciated? My plan is to connect it up to TORQUE and drive it whilst monitoring the fuel pressure.

Would also like to know what is the best home user diagnostics to get for the 06 Master? I have a decent laptop so pic based is ok.

Thanks
