My 2004 Laguna has developed an irritating fault whereby sometimes, when the key card is inserted and the Start/Stop button pressed, there is a fairly loud and regular clacking/clicking noise which seems to come from the area around the heater control dials. By playing around I have determined the following...
1. The noise doesn't occur each time the car is started and as far as I can tell it's purely random if it makes the noise or not. The clicking never happens mid-drive, only ever when the engine is switched on.
2. The clicking noise is unrelated to the fan as it occurs even when the fan is switched off. Similarly, changing the fan speed does not affect the clicking noise.
3. The clicking is very regular, ten seconds between clicks, which makes me thing it's caused by something turning behind the heater control panel.
4. The clicks are loud - road and radio noise does not drown them out.
5. The heater, indeed the rest of the car, appears to work normally. The noise is just constant and annoying.
6. When the clicking noise occurs my "fix" is to switch the car off, take out the key card, then turn the temperature dial fully to the left, then right, a couple of times. That usually results in a click-free re-start of the engine and funny looks from passengers!
Does anyone have any ideas as to what this might be? If it's helpful I can try to record the sound and upload it here.
