2006 Clio III power steering

Hi there,
My wifes 2006 Clio III 1.2 Expression power steering has stopped working.
I know it's electronic and been quoted silly prices (£800) to fix.
I've been told that a new motor needs to be fitted and it has got to be coded into the car by the Renault Dealer.
Has anyone any experience with these and is there a cheaper way of repairing it? at £800 i may aswell scrap it and buy another.
