'07 115dCi Trafic / Clutch cable broken?

Hello,

First I noticed my clutch pedal felt stiff

Then a few days later the cable detached from where it connects to the pedal. Can't really see the part where it connects but I reckon the cable end is damaged.

Is this as simple as just getting a new cable fitted? Anything to watch out for? Why would the clutch be stiff in the first place?
