I get a strange knocking / rattle from the front of the car when accelerating in a straight line. I had the track rods and end replaced not so long ago, as well as the anti-roll bar links (for MOT etc.) so I'm not sure what else can be causing this noise. It's not like the traditional CV joint clicking, but rather a dull knocking.
A bit of background - this noise has been there for some time now. Recently, I had the CV gaitors replaced. They weren't torn or anything, but I think they were the incorrect size as they kept popping off every so often on full lock so I thought I'd get these changed.
Since the gaitors were done, (about 4 months ago now), recently, the CV joints have started to click faintly when turning. The clicks are faint, but the knocking in a straight line has gotten louder and more prolonged. Is this a coincidence or can these be related? The knocking in a straight line isn't always there - probably worse when the car is coldish and under load. I don't think it's an engine noise.
Possibly related - when I accelerate harshly and change gear, or even when turning a tight corner but trying to set off fast (i.e. on full-lock from standstill), I get a strange one-off knock / bang as if something moves out of place.
PS - Is it easier to replace just the CV's or the whole driveshaft (Megane 2005 1.5dCi)
