Mk2 Clutch Problem or Not?

I have a 2003 Clio 1.2 Expression that has 41K on the clock that I bought in April. It's it really nice condition for its age but as I'm the 5th owner, my assumption is that it's probably done a lot of relatively short journeys (based on what I know of the two previous owners).

In the past month of so it has developed two noises.

  1. A short squeak/squeal when I pull away in first gear. It doesn't happen every time, but seems to occur when the revs are on the low side. Other gear changes are noise free and there's no apparent loss of power when accelerating hard etc. I have also noticed that when moving slowly on the drive (gravel) it does tend to kick a little gravel up (like the clutch is engaging abruptly rather then smoothly).
  2. When the engine is running there is a "tickerty tickerty tickerty" noise. It's not really audible when driving or when inside the car, but you can hear it when outside the car. There is a small change in the noise when the clutch is depressed.
I'm no mechanic (really!) but does this sound like a failing clutch or something more serious?
