if you drop the back seat and climb in with a torch & small screw driver.

At the bottom of the lock above the striker plate is a slot- within that slot is the emergency trunk release, using the screw driver in the slot move the actuator from one side to the other (I deliberately haven't said if from left to right or right to left as it depends if your looking at it from outside the car or inside on your back or tummy) the lock will then disengage allowing it to open.
Once the tailgate is open you can remove the trim panel and investigate the cause of your issue.
