clutch replacement Espace iv 2.2dci - my experience dmf to single mass fly all ok!

Hi all,

I thought it might be potentially useful to other owners post about my recent clutch replacement on a 2005 Grand Espace 2.2dci manual, as I couldn't really find any definitive info on searches in this forum or general internet.

Our car at 99000 miles started occasionally do some strange things.

firstly one day my wife called me after the school run to say she could not get the car in gear at all. I went with other car to rescue but when I got in it, it seemed perfectly fine! I thought maybe she had been imagining it or doing something wrong until 500 miles later it did it to me - changing gear it suddenly jumped itself back into neutral and would not go in gear. Clutch felt lighter than usual. I pulled over and pumped the pedal a few times and fiddled around with the gearstick and after a few minutes it returned to normal. Wierd.

Also, it started to shudder and vibrate when pulling away in 1st or reversing. Not a smooth clutch take-up. I changed the lower engine mount which was shot, but this didnt resolve the issue. The last clue was a metallic knocking sound on start up and turn off, and subtly when idling which I had put down to the exhaust but was in fact the clue that the Dual Mass fly wheel had failed.

I think this DMF failure coupled with worn clutch (although not slipping at that stage) meant on occasion the clutch friction plate was somehow sticking to the dmf causing us to not be able to declutch and hence not be able to change gear.

The last time it happened, it got stuck in gear. Again I rescued wife and kids, got in it and rocked it forward and back and was able to return to neutral and with engine off clutch in select a gear. I chose 2nd, clutch in, started it knowing it would move and run, I had planned to drive back in 2nd to get it home but actually it immediately freed itself and I got home as normal all be it with shuddering and now it was also slipping in higher gears.

To cut a long story short, I decided hydraulics fine, time to replace clutch and dmf. Then I realised the cost. dmf is 450-600 on its own.

Mr Clutch quote in Kingston (surrey) was actually reasonable if you don't need the dmf. It was about £420 incl vat and clutch kit and incl the slave / concentric cylinder. However they also diagnosed from my description dmf failure and the extra cost for dmf replacement was a further £620. I couldnt warrant spending over £1k on this car when its barely worth that. But its a great car, wife needs it for 7 seats due to childminding and I just serviced it and replaced brakes and tyres.

Solution? on ebay or the link below (to Nationwide Clutch Dis Ltd) you can but a conversion kit to go to a traditional solid-flywheel setup and this cost me less than £240 incl postage for a quality Valeo solid flywheel, clutch kit and concentric cylinder. This compares to minimum £600 odd for parts kit using dmf and reduces likelyhood of future dmf problems which seems common accross all car makes, as LUK appear to have a monopoly on these and hence stupid prices for a flawed product.

I was going to fit it myself but time pressures meant I couldnt do it quickly enough. A local garage did it for me (I know the mechanic), he charges 60/hr and time quoted was 6.2 hrs. The only issue was the concentric cylinder in the kit wasnt the right type so correct part was additional £34 so no biggie.

Total cost for fitted clutch and flywheel and concentric slave cylinder was around £640 all-in and I got it back in 2 days. Anyone interested the garage is in Hampton Court, Surrey, literally next to the station. You don't need a specialist Renault place to do this work, and no special tools are needed since you're not refitting a dmf.

The car now drives perfectly, no more shuddering or vibrations, and all gears engage fine like before.

I dont notice any difference in engine running sounds or diesel vibration etc having the solid setup as compared to the dmf. Note that the friction plate has the springs in it instead of the dmf so it still smooths things out on takeup.

So overall I see no reason not to recommend this solution to others.

Feel free to pm me if you need any more info.

Here's the link to the kit I bought: (for Espace iv 2.2dci manual 6sp 150bhp)

you can also find this on ebay but price was a little higher (probably because ebay is greedy with their sale fees!)

ps, I think its same kit for the Laguna ii with same engine/gearbox
