My weekend commute involves around an hours motorway drive. Driving normally the temperature gauge is right in the middle, but when I'm on the motorway the coolant temperature gauge will intermittently peak to the maximum, then go back down to the middle mark immediately. When the gauge peaks the "stop" and red engine "stop" warning lights both come on, then go off when the gauge drops to the middle again.
This also happens on long, gradual hills - the temperature peaks when I get to the top of the hill,
This has been happening for the last 2 months, and there is no change in how the car drives and performs whatsoever, so I don't know if this is a knackered coolant temperature sensor.
I would really appreciate some help on why this may be happening and what to do about it.
Thanks!
