Progressive Dephaser Pulley Problem Or Coil?

I have a 2003 1.6 16v Megane with the confirmed dephaser pulley issue, which up until recently my garage said hadn't become too serious yet.

However, over the weekend, the car suddenly started running on 3 cylinders, as if one of the coils has failed. (had this with my wifes car so know the symptoms).

My question is, could it simply be one of the coils, or does the dephaser pulley fault give this type of behaviour when it starts to become more advanced?

Also, does the dephaser pulley fault cause heavy fuel consumption?
