Sams car has Electric assisted steering. Could indeed be an Alternator fault.
Early Scenics had hydraulic power steering which had an engine powered pump.
Vauxhall power steering is different, so lets not muddy the water with that.
I don't think the steering actually locked, just that the power assistance disappeared, therefore went HEAVY. Had it locked, you would have been up the kerb.
Were there any other messages (check power Steering & Battery for instances), I realise you had controlling issues at the time?
Check, in no particular order :- Auxiliary Belt, Alternator freewheel pulley (a known failure), Have the car diagnostically read, which should tell what happened, Battery top fuses for security, any dampness or evidence of, especially under passenger seat or UCH behind glove box, lastly the Power box (UPC) under the battery.
