Scenic rear suspension issue

Hi, my old 2000 scenic developed an awful knock from the rear nearside corner this week. As the old girl has covered some 160k I feared the worst ie. torsion bars/back axle failure. A close inspection this morning revealed a broken shock, literally in two pieces!!

I just wondered how many scenics might have been condemned to scrappers due to a shocker issue?

What is interesting is a friend who runs a European car specialist garage and fixes loads of Renault's says he has NEVER once come across the splines failing in a back axle on a scenic.

Just the sticky caliper in that corner to figure out now.............can't work out if it's the handbrake cable or the caliper itself?
