Wiper arms remloval on megane mk1

for the first time in my life I cannot remove a wiper arm. this is serious enough for me to buy new tools which have not helped.
on a 51 plate megane it looks simple enough but not so. is it a tapered fit or screw on, square oblong or what? because I do not want to use heat near the windscreen I am stumped.
does anyone else have the problem or is it easier than cutting them off?????

please help. I have to remove them to get at the motor which is intermittent and has now stopped working altogether
