Scenic 05 Steering Locking While Driving

Hi all,

We seem to have a few symptoms that are well-discussed here, but one which is not so I wanted to ask you all for a hand!

My girlfriend was driving our 05' Scenic 1.9 dci the other day, after a round trip of a hundred miles or so. Going down a straight near the house at about 30 mph she got the CHECK INJECTION warning and the SERVICE light lit up. The engine carried on like normal, but the steering locked! She was driving for about 5 seconds with no ability to turn the wheel whatsoever. If this had happened at a junction or on a roundabout it could well have been a lethal crash. Has anyone come across this before?

Today we tried to get it running, and it starts fine, but there is now a brand new emissions warning on the dash.

Might be wort adding that a few days ago we were getting the CHECK INJECTION warning while trying to start the car, and were being greeted by nothing happening. Turned out the local garage had put a new battery in but had barely secured the negative terminal. Jamming it on seemed to fix the issue. Of course this is probably unrelated to the latest issues but...

So I'm thinking the first thing to change/check would be the coils/plugs as this might be causing the emissions warning, before we start looking for dead sensors etc.

But the steering? That's terrifying. If we need a new steering rack I think we might just junk the car. We bought it for £870 last May with 38,000 on the clock, and since then it has eaten £2500 worth of repairs.

Thanks!
