Renault Tragic 1.9dci replacement valves

It will depend on how bad or good condition the valve seats are. But there is a simple way to check if you are getting a good seat on all surfaces before you finish with the fine grinding paste.

Clean the valve seat and mating face of the valve with white spirit - dry it off - take a pencil and draw radial lines around the seat - spin the valve a few times. If the lines disappear then you have a good seat. Repeat the process on the valve. Then finish off with fine paste adding a few drops of white spirit -this allows the paste to freely cut.

Once the valves have been refitted and you want to do a confirmation test set the cylinder head on its side and pour white spirit down the ports. Leave for a few hours and if the seating is poor you will see dampness leak into the cylinder head.

Trying to estimate time for grinding valves is like asking how long is a piece of string - sometimes its quick - sometimes a few hours. The higher mileage the longer it will take as the valve seats will have become work hardened.
