Air Conditioning - Megane Scenic Mk II '56

Having just bought the above car I expect I'll be drawing on the knowledge here a fair bit in the coming months :-)

My first problem is the air conditioning. It just doesn't seem to work. There is no LED on the switch when pressed, no noticeable drop in engine revs and no tell tale clunk of the compressor kicking in.

The heater system seems to work fine, just no change when the a/c button is pressed.

Now in the manual it states that the a/c will not work if the outside temperature is low. It doesn't elaborate beyond this. It's currently around 1 to 6° here so I guess that classes as low!

Can anyone tell me more? Even if this is the case should the LED illuminate? If I'm looking at an air conditioning failure, any tips on troubleshooting would be greatly appreciated.
