Clio 3 indicator/lights stalk problem

Hi all; done a search but not found an answer - when I put the right-hand indicator on the headlights come on briefly as the stalk moves to the full travel, giving anyone in front the impression that I have flashed them (!) to pull out or over. Dangerous; the only answer being to have lights on all the time so that doesn't happen.
Logic says the stalk is at fault but when did French electrics ever work logically?
Anyone had this happen and what was the cure?
(2007 Clio 1.2 16v)
