Spare wheel winch

Hello,

I just bought a grand espace IV 2013 and it is NOT fitted with a spare wheel. There is just a big empty HOLE under the back of the car. After looking around it seems that a WINCH is required ... (whole new concept to me) but why not ..... what I want to know is ......

IF I get hold of a suitable winch (one that is no jammed) and fit it, will it work with a standard wheel/tyre 225/55/17 or do I HAVE to get a pancake space saver spare wheel ???

another worry .... I've seen a lot of posts about these winches jamming ..... is that common ... I mean a spare wheel that is jammed in place is not much use to anyone is it ??
