I am currently replacing a water pump and timing belt on a scenic 1.6 16V engine (2002 plate) and have all the tools required. Water pump changed, no problem. However, the crank pulley is not free to move/rotate as stated in the manuals and many posts on this forum. I lock the crank at TDC cylinder 1 using the locking pin. All looks good.
The camshafts are then locked using locking/locating tool. Fine so far. I then fit the belt. Again, all fine so far. When I set the tensioner to it's correct position a load is put on the cam locker and it is quite a tight fit. If I remove this cam locker it won't fit back in the cam slots. They appear to have moved about 10 degrees. Is this because the crankshaft pulley is fixed.
Should I, a) try to free the crankshaft pulley or b) fiddle with the timing so that the cam shafts align to the crank at TDC cylinder 1?
