That doesn't mean you should make your own needs & wants secondary, but just be aware that anything irreversible will put more off, than attract them. Also, that the next purchaser won't place anywhere near the same value on what you've invested or spent.
I fitted a K & N filter to my van, many years ago - it fits in the existing airbox, and is completely undetectable.
I didn't fit it for more power or mpg (if anything, that was purely a bonus), nor for a noise (which I wouldn't be able to hear in a van anyway).
But simply because I worked out that after 4 years, it would be saving me money over continually buying a disposable filter.
So, for me, there was a tangible reason, and my head, rather than heart, made the correct choice. (it also didn't need declaring to the insurers)
These universal kits do add a bit of underbonnet 'bling', but in most cases are either badly made, badly fitted or a placebo, intended to 'fix' some other problem (usually owning a car not as sporty as you'd like).
They really add nothing to the driving experience, and if you want extra noise - just drive everywhere with the windows open a touch, that's free and won't risk damaging anything.
