Clio mk2 rear light fault.

The rear lights in my clio have developed a fault, at first it was just the fog light illuminating on the dash but now it's the rear lights flashing like mad under braking/indicating. I checked the earth points under the plastic guard on the boot and it's just the same. Looked on the forum and it's been said to check the bulb holders. Would this be where the bulbs go in or the wires running in behind knackered? Also I've seen some people suggest wd40 and others suggest contact cleaner. What's the best overall to resolve the problem?
