More on new batteries and radio codes

Having read other posts on problems recoding radios, and knowing I will need to replace my battery in the next few months I have an idea. Does anyone know any reason it will not work?

I have a few 12v batteries hanging around (gel batteries from golf trollies etc). If I wire one of these to a cigar lighter plug (male) and connect it to my car I should be able to remove the car battery and replace it without losing any of the settings. OK... or am I missing something.

Currently in twodogs's garage:
2011 Grand Scenic III 1.5dci EDC; Royal Enfield 350 Bullet; Boxes of tools and spare parts I will never need again.
